12.26.07 Boxing day! So as we learned on this fine celebration of boxing is that the term does not refer to two sweaty, testosterone driven, alpha male, vein popping, beefy men, with tiny little voices and manhoods from taking too many ‘roids, beating each other to a bloody pulp, it is actually a day to BOX all your unused goods and give them to charity! But most people disregard that and just buy more useless crap from the millions of sales all over the city. Out of curiosity and Jessie’s need for a skirt and a pair of shorts we headed down to the local malls to witness the insanity, and it was exactly that, INSANE! There was a que (British talk for “line”) for everything, especially going up escalators, and many of these places apparently hadn’t heard of stairs yet. So we waited and waited in line with the thousands of pushing and shoving people and up the little black spikey rivers flowing upstream and, long story short, Jess bought some cheap shorts and a nice skirt from Esprit.
After the mayhem we headed to the botanical gardens/park. Past a few gorgeous memorials and fountains to wars and the french (yeah I didn’t get it either) we found ourselves under a creepy looking tree full of literally thousands of HUGE bats!!! We were expecting to see a lot of cool things in Australia, but bats were not among them. They are called Fox Bats because of their mane of reddish fur, and their wings are the most elegant looking leather. They have a wingspan of 1.5 meters (I am 2 meters tall if that helps with measurmant for you silly Americans) and make the coolest noises. So we strolled along the park a bit longer under tree after tree containing thousands of these flying black and red beasts and hit the edge of the park with our very first view of the Sydney Opera house!
We sat on a bench and ate our lunches while enjoying the exquisite view of the harbor, bridge, and Opera house. After some time relaxing we heard a loud screech above our heads and we saw another flying creature I did not expect to see; a huge bright white cockatoo with its gorgeous bright yellow fan on it’s head. I was dissapointed that I couldn’t get a picture before it flew away, but the disapointment turned to awe and excitement when, on the way back, we stumbled upon huge groups of them roaming through the park. I spent about 20 minutes just taking pictures and playing with these gorgeous birds and after almost getting locked in the park, headed back home. By this time it is sunset and the bats all start coming out in bulk to play! Swarms flew through the park and city, some flying right over our heads, it was a beautiful sight.
We finally got back to the hostel, cooked dinner and had a good nights sleep.
